Buddy Guy was the opener.
We came in about middle of his set. He was fairly entertaining.
He did lots of impressions of guitarists “he learned something from”
He turns 74 this weekend, but you couldn’t have guessed it given his energy on stage.
He finished his set off with a medley / mashup of Voodoo Child (Hendrix) with Sunshine of Your Love (Cream) and some other blues sounding riffs I didn’t recognize. It was pretty cool.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers took a good long while to get on stage. I think part of that was a very late arriving crowd, but the place was 99% full by the time they took the stage.

Tom had a really nice stage presence. A lot of dramatic pauses in songs timed to his… swaying, stepping, waving. He also REALLY got into his maracas during guitar solos. Not much in the way of storytelling or anything like that, but he was really thankful of the applause they got for each song. A couple of times “Petty! Petty!” chants broke out and he seemed a little unsure how to react to it.

I played around with the manual modes of the camera a ton, so going to post a lot of pics. Now if I could only remember which I took with what settings!

All of my pictures can be seen here.

No video this time around, batteries were low from the start!

Weather was perfect. Venue was a little odd. The AstroTurf was kind of a weird feeling and the whole layout was fairly cramped.

Opening band was… terrible!

The Flaming Lips opened with lots of energy. Hamster ball on the crowd, loads of confetti and streamers, a ginormous balloon, inflatable glow worms, and very trippy/sensual video. Overall a very strong new hippies / hipster feel to the whole thing.

After a bit, the energy of the band and crowd kind of petered out and we called it a night about two thirds of the way through the setlist. Perhaps we were missing something by being… sober?

Gotta be honest in that I felt a little bit let down. Flaming Lips have long been hyped as one of the most entertaining live acts.

We were late again, but thankfully did not miss too much. I would have liked to hear Spirit of Radio and Time Stands Still, but oh well. We got there during “Leave that Thing Alone”.

Their video screen was shockingly sharp and bright. Their production work and it’s use was great, but not over the top. A+ for that. Their pyro and fireworks… well, the timing was off, it was mostly underwhelming, and in some spots just completely ill conceived. It seemed to just interrupt the music. I did get one cool picture of some pyro though, so I HAVE to post that obviously!

The video interlude between Part 1 of the show and Moving Pictures was kind of neat and entertaining. What was more funny was Geddy Lee saying “We’ll be right back, due to our advancing age we need a short break”

Not exactly what a rock star would say, but Rush has never been the picture of rock stardom!

The fact that they were doing Moving Pictures in its entirety was great.

Neil Peart’s drum solo was VERY long and wasn’t so much focused on insane speed and technique, but more about exploring rhythms.

The lead in from there to Closer to the Heart… well I would have preferred a more traditional rendition of the song.

The band seemed to have the most fun doing the 2112 Overtures.

Video outro was entertaining, but we should have been beating feet. Getting out of Jones Beach after a sold out show, on a Saturday night… from the last song until we were on the Meadowbrook was likely an hour+
