Our last day was a very, very long one.

We started in Ocean Shores and packed up. Rather than chill on the beach and then head to the airport at the end of the day, we decided to super road trip…

We went up 101 back into Olympic all the way to the north edge of the peninsula, then through the park coming out at Port Angeles.

A ton of driving, but some really nice views along the way.

From Port Angeles we followed the Puget sound south then drove out onto some islands via bridges…

Before catching a ferry back to Seattle…

Yes, that white hazy thing is Rainier.

Once we docked north of Seattle we fought rush hour traffic and made our way to the airport to catch our redeye home.

Crunched on time we had to do all of Olympic in essentially one monstrously long day.

Early in the morning we were in the car and working our way into the mists of Olympic. First top, the temperate rain forest side… Specifically the Hall of Mosses and the other hikes in that same area.

As we came out of our 2nd hike, a huge herd of Elk/Moose stampeded nearby in the woods. It was kind of cool but also kind of scary. They’re huge. Sadly no good pictures.

We ate some leftover pizza at the picnic area and then drove through Forks (aka Twilight central) otw to the ocean side of things.

Its kind of sad what used to be a quiet logging and camping supply town has become this weird commercial cluster F in the middle of nowhere.

The driftwood was as impressively massive as ever.

Despite temps in the low 50s, a pretty good breeze, and a steady drizzle we soldiered onwards and made it to Hole in the Wall and even did the very steep hike up and down to see it from the better (but rarely accessed) side…

At the end of a very long day we drove out to the Indian Reservation from twilight to see a beach there. It didn’t really look any different…. but the local convenience store gave us warning … Vampire Threat Level High!

The morning after the concert we showered and were off. The poor little town was completely overrun by grungy Seattlites and Jazz festival goers finding breakfast was a pain.

Eventually we hit the road and began the trek from East WA near-desert through the Cascades and all the way to the Ocean Shores peninsula.

The drive was fairly uneventful… we went through Aberdeen (Cobain’s hometown) which had a sign “Welcome to Aberdeen, Come as You Are” which was pretty awesome. We figured we’d get a picture on our way back to Seattle, but as it happened we ended up going another way.

Ocean Shores reminds me a lot of the Jersey Shore (not the show). Super touristy and no one actually swims…

We went for a long walk on the beach, but forgot the camera.

The rest of the pictures for Day 3 here.

Woke up early to get breakfast at the market. Check out of the hotel and set off on our drive out to middle of nowheresville, WA.

Drive goes pretty smoothly, but we have to wait a couple hours for our room to be ready. Drop off stuff and we head to the Gorge. We arrive pretty much exactly in time to go in 30 minutes early with our super duper fan club GA tix.

We make the critical decision.. forget a nice comfy spot on the grass or sitting on a nice big rock, we’re going for front and center – and we got it:

2.5 hours of standing in the semi sun and sitting on heated asphault when finally Meat Puppets take the stage…

A very short set list, but they sounded really good. All of Soundgarden was hanging out stage left listening too, cool to see.

Next up was Mastadon, who honestly were not that good. I’m just not a fan of Scream-o…

Starting to get pretty full as the sun is beginning to set…
Next up Queens of the Stone Age (without Dave Grohl).
They were pretty good, despite Josh Homme being pretty drunk. Setlist was almost exactly what I wanted.

Finally dark and the crowd really started to feel the anticipation.
Having traveled across the country and then stood there all day in the heat, I kind of new it would somehow be a bit of a let down.
Not that they were bad, but I guess our expectations were huge. There was a lot of hoping for Eddie Veddar to show up and do some Temple of The Dog songs.
The setlist was pretty good, although short by their standards because of 4 bands.

We actually left during Room a Thousand Years wide, but could still hear clearly all the way back at the car as they finished Slaves & Bulldozers. We slept well that night.
